Almost there! After a few interruptions we are back in gear working on the Twistie Recipes ebook! We are no longer accepting twistie recipes at this time; we appreciate everyone that sent in recipes for consideration.

Completionof the ebook is now slated for early 2012 due to the large volume of twistie recipes involved. All twistie recipes including those submitted are tested and beads made to check reaction andcompatibility. As you can imagine, this is very timeconsuming. Our desire is to produce an ebook with twistie combos thatactually work in creating beautiful beads and not simply a list of random colors thrown together. Thank you for your patience!

We’re working on a rather extensive Twistie Recipes ebook and would like you to be a part of it. If you’ve got a favorite combo or know of some classic tried and true ones, we’d love to hear from you! If you’ve got a picture of the twistie used on your finished piece, that would be great but not mandatory.

If we add it to the tutorial, we’ll include the picture(s) along with your name and any web links you’d like added (website, blog, Etsy, ebay, etc.). You’ll also receive a free copy of the Twistie Recipes ebook when completed. The Twistie Recipes ebook is tentatively scheduled for release in late 2011.

The dark ivory twistie base caused an interesting effect. As the ivory was heated and began to web, the colorful stripes took on an appearance like unto coloring on paper with crayons. The effect can be controlled by the length of time and heat in the flame.

ASK Silver Rattan & Vetrofond Black Reactions

In a recent conversation with Deb Dabatt of Firebird Flamework, she mentioned some interesting reactions she's been getting when combining ASK Silver Rattan and Vetrofond Black. "Interesting" is putting it rather mildly; they're beautiful and quite amazing. All the beads below are the result of working only the two glass colors mentioned in different flame environments.

Deb said she achieved the effects by working the beads this way:

"After I have finished shaping the bead, I use a heavy reduction flame working the bead just beyond the tip of the yellow candles, checking frequently until I obtain the desired results, before putting it into the kiln.
Results can be variable, dependant on how much black is left exposed to show the effect & how long the bead is worked in the reduction flame."

The Second Silver Color How To Booklet

If you're a beadmaker and love all the new silver laden glass available now but not sure how to work them, I've got good news for you!

Hayley Tsang of Envision conducted two Silver Color How To exchanges on the Lampwork Etc. (LE) forum. She compiled all the info gathered from the Second Silver Color How To Exchange and created a beautiful, info packed reference CD full of gorgeous silver glass beads to ogle while picking up tips and techniques to get the most out of your silver glass.

Its me again, am I the only person who appreciates your blog?? Well, the rest of them don't know what they are missing.. You provide me with so much inspiration.. and my bench is littered with damn twisties now.. A question.. Hec, you use red roof tile a lot, could I sub coral for it?

Glad to hear the pics and recipes have inspired you to explore the world of twisties and apply them to suit your beading design! It does become addictive, lol.

I have tried different corals as a base bead but found most of them will darken to nearly black when used with reactive glasses. Along with the fact that I tend to work very hot and most of my beads are long, the added working time simply burns the coral color out.

Red Roof Tile will not burn as quickly but will still show the darken/black color around the different colors added to it as you can see in this close up. It also creates a bubbly effect that I like for organic effects. Click on the pic for a closer view.

Your results may be far different working with coral if you make smaller beads and work your color cooler. Give it a go and send me a pic; we'll post the results for anyone else interested. I'm curious to see if it can be done also.

I tend to cook my beads most of the time. As this bead was being shaped, the enamel dipped stringer began to boil and formed the yellow-orange webbing on the surface, burning out the darker red enamel.

I usually reduce Gaia to get the wonderful rainbow iridescent shimmer across the surface of a bead. However, for some reason the iridescence came out patchy in places and I wasn't pleased with the results once the bead was taken out of the kiln. I decided to give it a light etching which produced the bead you see here. I'm satisfied with the end result but I could have achieved the same results with plain transparent green; would have been far cheaper...

Draco Veridis II

I wanted to create another bead similar to Draco Veridis, pictured a few beads below this post. I wanted more of a serpent/dragon appearance so I used a dark base and didn't add the Opal Yellow twistie that was used in the first Draco Veridis bead. Etching the bead also added to the effect, at least I think it does. I think I achieved the desired result somewhat but it's still a work in progress.

This bead was a real bear to photograph correctly. The base color is a cool coral/brick color and not as orange at the pics show but I couldn't adjust the color without altering the color of the stringer design.

Base: Vetrofond Odd Lime Sweet. In Europe this particular color is called something but the name escapes me at the moment. If you know what it's called, please post a comment so I can add it. Thanks!

This bead was made a few months ago but I didn't put her up here because I couldn't be sure of all the colors used in her. I loved making this bead, until I added the Raku stringer. Forgetting that Opal Yellow likes to spread, I placed the stringer on top. As you can see in some places the stringer began to creep. I still like the bead very much, but it could have been better.
